The most fun I've had DIYing yet!

Updated: Oct 15, 2023

So a couple of years ago I came across the most simple DIY project that had such an impressive outcome. It was a DIY created by @jaci.daily where she rubbed mud onto a pot/vase which made it look like an ancient object that was dug out of the ground (hence 'found pot'). I was obsessed and wanted to rub mud on everything! Anyway, I found this lamp in an op-shop one day and knew exactly what I was going to do with it! So if you're interested in creating this look too, I have all the details here.

Materials

  • Masking Tape / Painters Tape

  • Drop Sheet / Newspaper

  • Rust Oleum 2x Ultra Cover Paint+Primer in Black

  • Old Bowl or Container

  • Damp Cloth or Sponge

  • Dry Cloth or Sponge

  • Stirring Stick

  • Dirt (doesn't matter what kind, just have a dig in the garden)

  • Water

  • Gloves (if you don't want to get your hands dirty)

Prep Take the lamp shade off and tape up anything you don't want paint on. So for me, this was the power cord, but I also put some tape inside the housing where the globe goes so I didn't get any paint on the electrical components inside.

Wipe the lamp down with a damp cloth or even a little soapy water if it's particularly dirty.

Paint Make sure the lamp is dry then spray it with 2-3 coats of the Rust-Oleum 2x Ultra Cover Paint+Primer in Black, making sure to let each coat dry in between.

Mud coat Now for the fun part! Pop on some gloves then mix your dirt and a little bit of water in your bowl. You would rather the mud to be on the runner side as your just wanting a light layer. Grab a handful of mud and start spreading it all over the lamp then leave to dry.

Wipe Back Once dry you can take your dry cloth and start wiping the mud (now dirt) off so you're just left with a residue of dirt. You can keep wiping to your desired look and if there's anywhere you don't want dirt at all, use your damp cloth to wipe it back. The best thing about this technique is if you really don't like the end result you can wash it all off and start again.

Re-assemble All you have to do now is put your shade back on, take off any masking tape and pop in a g It is honestly that easy, and if you weren't onto the trend a couple of years ago, you will definitely be onto it now!

Happy mudding!
